[Work] 《Principles》by Ray Dalio (part 2)



Dalio's story in the book made me feel deeply. Dalio faced management problems when managing his own company. He argues that within the company, any incidents and issues should be completely open and transparent, with any errors on the table and ensure that the problem is resolved. However, his practice has made employees feel unrespected and humiliated, which has seriously eroded the morale of the company. This made Dalio feel very surprised because he didn't think about it. Another is to evaluate the "player scorecard" for the company's internal staff. When I first saw this action in the book, the first reaction was also. In the face of being scored by myself, would there be privacy violations and uncomfortable feelings?


In fact, this is the contradiction that needs to be overcome in human nature. We are used to hiding our weaknesses and showing the best. So when we have to admit mistakes and face mistakes, there will be a great sense of resistance in our hearts. However, in another concept in the book, the constant evolution of each species is invariable. In the face of a rapidly changing environment, we must constantly learn and think to avoid making mistakes. Accepting yourself and accepting others' opinions, seeking credibility, and also having independent thinking together, can propose a reverse thinking person who can help us make better decisions. Therefore, whether it is an open policy or a scorecard model, thinking from another perspective allows us to understand ourselves and understand each other, to face problems in a more objective manner, and to increase the chances of making correct decisions. .


With the success of the Bridge Water Fund, Dalio attributed most of it to systematizing investment decisions, eliminating emotional impacts and making the best trading decisions. And how do we make the best decisions in life and work, listing the principles is the primary condition for systematization.

Thinking → Principles → Algorithms


Slow down your thinking so you can note the criteria you are using to make your decision. Quietly think about the way you are making decisions.


Write the criteria down as a principle. Write these criteria as your principle.


Think about those criteria when you have an outcome to assess, and refine them before the next "one of those" comes along. When you use these principles to make decisions, what results do you get? Is there room for improvement so that you can make better decisions in the future? Then evolve!
